A momentous event unfolded in Barangay Boheywas, Lamitan City, Basilan on April 26, 2024, as a short program preceded the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon for the hand-over of two (2) coffee nurseries. Under the supervision of Lamitan City Rose Women Organization, Inc. (LCRWOI) and PROTECT-Peace in the BARMM Project, the initiative aimed to empower the Boheyawas Small Farmers Association in advancing their coffee cultivation efforts.
The presence of the City Agriculture Office of Lamitan City, led by Ms. Maybel Navarro, and MAFAR-Basilan represented by Ms. Nuriya Fernandez, added significance to the occasion. Both officials reiterated their commitment to supporting the coffee farmers in nurturing and expanding their nurseries, marking a pivotal moment with the establishment of the first integrated nursery in Lamitan City.
Ms. Fernandez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the program and introduced the farmers to services offered by the MAFAR-Basilan office. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Project Officer Alimudin M. Mala and Ms. Navarro, symbolized the official handover of the coffee nurseries, setting the stage for progress and growth in the local coffee industry.
Subsequently, attendees proceeded to the cluster 2 area for a site visit, showcasing the potential impact of the project on the community’s agricultural landscape.
The Promoting Resilient and Organized Citizenry towards Empowerment and Community Transformation for Peace in the BARMM (PROTECT-Peace in the BARMM) Project is a three-year project agreement between the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society, Inc. (CBCS) and Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) that aims to build people’s capacity for peacebuilding and socio-economic development in the BARMM.
