Embracing the spirit of artistic expression and creativity, the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS) participated in the historic inaugural celebration of MAKI+Fiesta, held at the Ignacio B. Gimenez KAL (IBG-KAL) Theater, University of the Philippines Diliman, on August 23-24, 2024.
MAKI+Fiesta celebrates free expression, democracy, and the creative economy. Inspired by the term “Makibaka,” the event honors the enduring struggle for equality, equity, justice, and freedom for all Filipinos. It is a collaborative effort among various sectors, including Fyt Media, Pumapodcast, Probe, UP Diliman, the Quezon City Government, and International Media Support, fostering strong social cohesion among Filipino creatives nationwide.
The event highlighted key topics such as storytelling, fact-checking, cybersecurity, the power of humor, artificial intelligence, disaster response, resilience and accountability, podcasting in the Philippines, content creation, and more.
More so, this event is a model worth replicating in the BARMM region, as it would bring together Bangsamoro creatives and empower them to showcase the region’s vibrant culture and unique history through the lens of the creative economy.
Indeed, art and design are powerful tools of expression and communication. When these creative forces combine, they can generate significant impacts, driving social change, harmony, and progress.
